Can Vitamin D Deficiency Cause Hearing Loss?

Many factors may play a role in developing hearing loss, including aging and exposure to loud noise. Research has shown that low levels of vitamin D may increase your risk for hearing loss as well.

Low Vitamin D Levels Linked To Hearing Loss

A recent study examining the link between hearing loss and vitamin D deficiency looked at data from 3,489 adults aged 50 years or older. Researchers found a significant association between those with vitamin D deficiencies and sensorineural hearing loss. They concluded that vitamin D may play a significant role in the auditory system.

Should You Try To Raise Your Vitamin D Levels?

If you’re concerned about your vitamin D levels, make sure to speak with your medical provider. They may recommend trying to get more daily sunlight or increasing your consumption of foods that are good sources of Vitamin D, such as fatty fish or fortified foods like milk and yogurt.

Do not take any supplements before asking your doctor if it is safe, and make sure not to go over the recommended dosage, as too much vitamin D is associated with other health problems.

Knowing the Signs of Hearing Loss

Hearing loss often comes on gradually. Many people don’t even know they have a problem at first or may downplay hearing issues as a normal part of getting older. However, the sooner you are diagnosed and get treatment, the more likely it is that you can get the most out of your treatment and protect against further damage.

Common early signs of hearing loss include:

  • Asking people to repeat themselves frequently
  • Struggling to follow conversations, especially in places with lots of background noise
  • Ringing or buzzing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Needing to turn the volume up on the TV or radio louder than you used to
  • Trouble hearing phone conversations
  • Having other people comment on your hearing

Get a Hearing Test To Stay Connected to Others

If you have signs of hearing loss, schedule an appointment for a hearing test at your earliest convenience. These exams can quickly and painlessly determine the cause and severity of your hearing problems and help your audiologist determine the best treatment.

In most cases, they will recommend hearing aids. The right pair of hearing aids make listening easier and helps you stay socially active. You can enjoy family dinners or connect with new friends at Coffee and Conversation at Cayce United Methodist Church.
