Don’t Let Halloween Allergens Cause a Fright

Allergies are an incredibly common condition. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America states that more than 50 million people in the United States experience various allergies each year and that allergies are the sixth leading cause of chronic illness in the country.

If your child has skin or food allergies, Halloween may pose a few challenges. Let’s examine a few of the different risks as well as what you can do to keep your child safe.

Halloween and Food Allergies

If your child has food allergies, you might worry about the candy and other various snacks they get while trick-or-treating or at a Halloween party at school. Many candies either contain common allergens, such as peanuts or are processed in the same factory that processes other food allergens.

To help prevent them from consuming something that may trigger their allergy symptoms, consider doing the following:

  • Speaking with their teachers or other parents about what your child cannot eat and ask that only safe snacks be brought into the classroom.
  • Tell your child not to eat any candy that they get from trick-or-treating until you can check the labels and ensure it’s safe.
  • Offer to trade any candies that aren’t safe for small toys or other treats your child might like so that they don’t feel left out of Halloween festivities.

Costumes and Irritating Materials

In addition to food, it’s important to ensure your child selects a safe outfit when shopping at Charleston Costumes.

Costumes can contain common allergens which can cause rashes and other reactions in children who have sensitivities. These allergens include:

  • Latex– Found in masks, body suits, and a liquid version is sometimes used in body paint.
  • Nickel– Used in accessories like swords, tiaras, magic wants and more. Nickel is one of the most common causes of allergic contact dermatitis, which is an itchy, red rash that can cause discomfort.
  • Fragrances and dyes: A variety of different fragrances and dyes can be found in makeup designed for face painting. Some of which have the potential to cause an allergic reaction. If you know your child has skin allergies, consider either skipping the face paint or doing some research on the ingredients included in each brand.

Be Prepared for an Allergic Reaction

Even when taking precautions, allergic reactions are possible. If your child has been prescribed an inhaler or EpiPen, make sure to bring it with you to any Halloween event. If you can’t be there with your child, make sure there is an adult present who can have your child’s medication on them and can administer it in case of a reaction.
