How To Spring Clean Allergies Out of Your Life

As the sun starts to shine and the flowers begin to bloom, you will probably start making a list of all the things you want to accomplish this spring. Between running through Brittlebank Park and enjoying an afternoon on the water, consider adding a few allergy-friendly cleaning chores to your to-do list.

Spring cleaning gives you the opportunity to push the dust and stuffiness from the winter months out of your home. Let’s look at a few tips for spring-cleaning allergies out of your life and home.

Change Your Air Filter

Air filters require changing every 30 to 90 days, depending on their type. As the first step in your spring-cleaning routine, change the filters in your HVAC system, portable and window AC units and air purifiers. Changing these filters will help you work towards clean, allergy-free air in your home.

Scrub Out the Mold

As the weather starts to warm up, the moisture in the air can lead to accelerated mold growth. At the start of spring, give your bathroom, basement and kitchen a thorough scrub with a detergent or cleaner to rid your house of any accumulated mold. To help prevent excess mold growth in your home, turn on your bathroom and kitchen fans for at least half an hour after showering or cooking. In some cases, you may require a dehumidifier in your bathroom, basement or kitchen.

Clear Out Pet Dander

We love our furry friends, but our allergies don’t always love their dander. It can be easy to let pet dander accumulate in the home over the winter. During spring cleaning, sweep and mop all hard surfaces and vacuum upholstery to rid your house of excess pet dander.

Watch Out for Dust Mites

Dust mites live in our bedding, throw pillows, carpeting, couches, window blinds and wherever else they can hide away. Clearing these little critters out is an essential step towards an allergen-free home. Wipe down hard surfaces, including blinds and fan blades, with a spray cleaner and throw your bedding and other fabric items in the wash to rid your house of dust mites.

Allergies are the sixth-leading cause of long-term illness in the United States, with more than 50 million people experiencing an allergic reaction each year. By using your spring clean to rid your home of allergens, you can take the first step towards a symptom-free season.
