Understanding Pediatric Glue Ear

Glue ear, or otitis media with effusion, occurs when fluid builds up and remains in the middle ear. Over time, the trapped fluid can thicken, earning the condition the name “glue ear.” The leading causes of glue ear are fluid retention following an ear infection or a blocked Eustachian tube. Potential factors leading to blockages include cold and flu, severe allergies, environmental irritants, genetic conditions and chronic acid reflux.

While glue ear is rarely a serious condition, it’s important to recognize its signs and know how to treat it to ensure greater comfort.

Recognizing the Symptoms of Glue Ear

About 80% of children will encounter glue ear at least once by age 10. The primary symptoms include a sensation of pain or pressure in the ear, temporary hearing loss and a ringing in the ear (tinnitus). Additionally, children might show signs such as fussiness, excessive sleepiness, poor concentration, a lack of response when spoken to or speaking louder than usual. While adults can get glue ear, it’s rare and they are less likely to exhibit behavioral changes.

Treatment Options for Glue Ear

During an examination, an ENT specialist will use a small scope to check for fluid in the middle ear. Often, glue ear resolves on its own within a few months. If it persists, your provider may recommend antibiotics to treat the underlying infection or ear tubes to prevent future infections.

If your child is uncomfortable while waiting for glue ear to clear, try a few of the following tips to lift their spirits:

  • Offer foods or comfort snacks, like soup or a pint of their favorite flavor from Republic Ice Cream
  • Create a cozy space with their favorite blankets and pillows
  • Provide books, coloring materials, puzzles or simple crafts to move their focus away from ear pain
  • Keep a positive attitude and remind them that their discomfort won’t last forever

By seeking the help of a qualified ENT provider and lifting your child’s spirits at home, you can help ease their discomfort while glue ear resolves.
