Why Does Steam Help Clear Congestion?

Approximately 12% of the U.S. population is experiencing nasal congestion, also called a stuffy nose, at any given time. While a stuffy nose isn’t usually a cause for immediate alarm, it can be an annoying symptom when prolonged. Let’s look at common causes of congestion and why steam can help relieve your symptoms.

Common Causes of Nasal Congestion

The mucus in your nose is the front line of defense in protecting your body from germs, dirt, allergens and more. While a certain amount of mucus is vital to a healthy immune system, inflammation or excess mucus production can leave you congested. Common conditions that can lead to inflammation and congestion include sinusitis, deviated septum, nonallergic or allergic rhinitis, nasal polyps and cold and flu viruses.

How Can Steam Help Clear Congestion?

Steam inhalation is a widely used congestion relief method. The hot steam works by moisturizing the nasal canal and loosening trapped mucus. There are a few ways you can employ steam inhalation to clear congestion:

  • Fill a large bowl with hot water and drape a towel over your head and the bowl, breathing in the steam as it rises.
  • Run a hot bath or shower with no fan and a towel under the door. Steam will build up in the room and help loosen your mucus. Run the bathroom fan after your shower to prevent mold buildup.
  • Brew a hot cup of ginger or peppermint tea, breathing in the steam as you drink it.
  • Grab a sinus or facial steamer for convenient steam inhalation. You will likely be able to find sinus steamers at drug stores or online retailers.

For an extra refreshing experience, add peppermint essential oils from Herba Botanicals to the water before you steam.

In addition to steam inhalation, addressing the underlying cause of your nasal congestion is a critical step toward long-term symptom relief.
